Why Hemorrhoids Are So Common After Childbirth

Pregnancy and delivery put significant pressure on the veins in the pelvic area. Between the weight of a growing baby, pushing during labor, and hormonal changes that relax blood vessel walls, hemorrhoids can develop or worsen rapidly — and for many women, they don't go away on their own.

  • Prolonged pushing during labor strains the rectal veins
  • Elevated progesterone relaxes vein walls, making swelling more likely
  • Postpartum constipation adds ongoing pressure
  • Symptoms can persist for weeks or months without treatment
Over 50% of pregnant women develop hemorrhoids, with higher prevalence in the third trimester
~30% of pregnant women experience constipation, which contributes to hemorrhoid development
Most cases respond well to in-office treatment — no surgery needed

What You Might Be Feeling

Postpartum hemorrhoids can range from mildly uncomfortable to quite painful. Common symptoms include:

Pain or Pressure

Aching, burning, or pressure around the anus — especially when sitting or after a bowel movement.

Bleeding

Bright red blood on toilet paper or in the bowl. Not normal — but very treatable.

Swelling or Lumps

A tender bulge near the anus, which may be a thrombosed external hemorrhoid requiring prompt care.

Itching or Irritation

Persistent itching or discomfort that makes recovery harder than it needs to be.

Prolapse

Internal hemorrhoidal tissue that bulges outside the anal canal — often associated with internal hemorrhoids.

Mucus or Soiling

Leakage or difficulty with hygiene that can irritate already-sensitive skin.

You Don't Have to Just "Live With It"

Many new moms assume postpartum hemorrhoids are something they have to endure. They are not. Most cases respond well to in-office treatment — no surgery, no anesthesia, and minimal disruption to your day.

Treatment Options We Offer

We tailor every plan to your situation — including whether you are breastfeeding or recently postpartum.

Rubber Band Ligation (Banding)

Our most common in-office procedure. A small band is placed at the base of an internal hemorrhoid, cutting off its blood supply. It shrinks and falls off on its own within a few days. No anesthesia needed. Most patients return to normal activities the same day.

Office-Based Procedures

For thrombosed external hemorrhoids or other cases, we offer targeted in-office procedures that provide faster relief than waiting for symptoms to resolve on their own.

Personalized Treatment Plan

Not every case requires a procedure — and that's okay. We'll build a personalized plan around your situation so you have the guidance you need to get through this time comfortably.

Breastfeeding? We've Got You.

We understand that many new moms are breastfeeding and have concerns about medications and procedures. Our in-office treatments — including banding — do not require anesthesia or systemic medications, making them safe and appropriate for breastfeeding mothers. We'll always review your full picture before recommending any treatment.

Some mild hemorrhoids improve with self-care over time. However, many postpartum hemorrhoids — especially those causing bleeding, prolapse, or significant pain — do not fully resolve without treatment. Getting evaluated early leads to faster relief.

Hemorrhoids can still develop after a C-section due to pregnancy-related pressure, constipation, and hormonal changes. Our evaluation and treatments apply equally to C-section and vaginal deliveries.
